WORKSHOP: Wheel Thrown, Altered, and Underglazed with Anika Major
Join instructor Anika Major for an in-depth dive into wheel throwing, altering, and underglaze in this 4 hour demonstration workshop! We’ll combine wheel thrown parts for more complex shapes, and delve into surface design using sgrafitto and wax techniques. She will begin with wheel thrown cups, and alter them using handmade templates to puff out the form to add curves and asymmetry. Bottomless cylinders will add height and offer options for necks to create bottles, decanters, or vases. Tidy up pots with refining techniques using a rasp and scotchbrite pad for smooth surfaces. We will wrap up by decorating the surface with underglaze. Learn how and when to apply this versatile material, and ways to brush on, layer, carve through, and inlay into texture. Come away with altering techniques to refine your wheel throwing skills, and jump into underglaze surfaces with confidence.
Artist Talk @ Kirkland Arts Center
Guest Artist, Anika Major is a Texas-born ceramic artist living in Seattle, Washington. Anika graduated from the University of North Texas, and received her BFA in ceramics and painting. She combines her love of clay and figure painting in her colorful painted pots. The shapes of her pots imitate the lumpiness of the human body, and her surfaces come alive with expressive and flamboyant heroines. Anika’s narratives of romance and queer domestic comforts are informed by her affinity for the pageantry of the rodeo, and the symbolism of the glamorous and feminine cowgirl. Join us in a Free Guest Artist Talk where Anika talks about her beginnings in clay, her inspirations, and her ceramic creations.
Lecture will be held in the KAC Gallery. This artist talk is free and open to the public. Follow @kirklandartscentereducation for more details.

Whether you're a complete beginner or have some prior experience with clay, this class will provide a solid foundation for your handbuilding journey.
Working with Underglaze
Anika Major will show you how underglazes can be layered for a painterly effect. She will talk inspirations for designs, transferring a design to clay, and painting techniques. Anika has used underglaze on the surfaces of her work for years and has a lot of tips to share! This is a demonstration workshop. Come with a sketchbook to capture your ideas.
Handbuilt Technique with Surface Decoration @ Clay By the Bay
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to work with soft slabs and create your own handbuilt lidded box! You’ll make a paper template with your desired shape to map out consistent shapes for the base and lid, and measure the walls before scoring and attaching all the pieces! We’ll discuss timing, drying, and how to tidy them up with a rasp to ensure a tight fit. After drying, we’ll walk through the basics of working with underglaze, and add decorative elements to the surface through color and sgraffito carving.
Underglaze Painting - Virtual Workshop with Companion Gallery
In this workshop, Anika will show you how she creates vibrant and painterly surfaces using thin layers of underglaze. Learn how to strengthen your illustrations using colorful shadows and linework. We will discuss how to thoughtfully attend to all surface areas of the form, and learn to place imagery that extends beyond the main face of the pot. Create definition through the process of sgraffito, and adding underglaze pencil at the greenware stage. Anika will walk you through firing and glazing tips for midrange glaze firing, but the techniques are useful for both low fire and high fire work. Come away with new ideas and approaches to the surface, and a confidence in underglaze to create illustrative surfaces in your own studio practice!
Solo Feature: Tender Rodeo, at Charlie Cummings Gallery
45 pieces, opening late September at Charlie Cummings Gallery!
I’m so excited to share this grouping of work, which is inspired by my time growing up in Texas. I wanted to represent some of the strong, feminine, and glamorous characters that I would have wanted to see as a queer youth.
Click the event to preview a few of the pieces that will be available!
Figure Painting With Clay
In this workshop, Anika will demonstrate her technique of figure painting with thin layers of underglaze to build up vibrant colors. Learn to hone your own illustrative surfaces by layering colors, and creating custom skin tones. We will discuss how to thoughtfully attend to all surface areas of the form, and learn to place figures and imagery that extends beyond the main face of the pot. Create definition through the process of sgraffito, and add elements of underglaze pencil at the greenware stage. We will cover firing and glazing tips to highlight the surface at midrange, but the techniques are useful for both low fire and high fire work. Come away with new ideas and approaches to the surface, and a confidence in underglaze to create illustrative surfaces in your own studio practice!

Painted Plates and Bisque Molds Workshop
One Day Workshop August 14th, 10am-12:30pm
Location: Saltstone Ceramics, Seattle, WA
Registration fee: $120
This workshop will focus on both hand-building techniques for making plates using bisque molds, as well as decoration techniques using underglaze to create painterly surface designs on bone dry wares. Students will be shown how to use a bisque mold to create a plate, how to add a hand-built foot, and the process of smoothing and clean up. Because of the length of the drying process, students will receive a small pre-made bone dry plate to use for the decoration process so that they can work alongside the instructor to build up thin layers of color for bold and colorful surfaces with their preferred design.
Any previous clay experience is helpful, but this workshop is open to all levels. Students will walk away with a finished plate that they have painted and the instructions to design their own plate molds for future work. This workshop will be in-person, hosted at Saltstone Ceramics in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle.
